Food Waste

Food Waste

Our institution is huge and due to them sheer amount of people who work and study at the university of Manchester a large amount of food is consumed and subsequently wasted. This campaign tackles Manchester food waste problem through 3 methods:

1. Educational

We work to educate people about the implications of food waste and encourage people not to cook / buy to much food.

On April 26th we are hosted our 'sustainable food' event with workshops that explored the food production journey; from local, organic and ethical food production to tips on not wasting food and vegan chocolate making tutorials it was a huge hit!

2. Redistributing Packaged Food

With such a large population at the University, food waste sometimes occurs despite our best efforts to minimise it. One person at the University, Janice Stephenson, has found a way of making sure that any extra food is used for better purposes. Janice is a chef for the University and spends her free time running the charity Humanity Giving Back.

We are proud to be working closely with 'Humanity Giving Back' to redistribute packaged food that is being thrown by university outlets to local refuges. Take a look at the amazing work they do!

3. Food waste bins

We have been lobbying the university to introduce food waste bins in halls and at food outlets and as a result of this campaign we are happy to annunce that we now have food waste bins in the Students' Union.
