Description

Interested in foreign affairs, economics, feminism, politics or philosophy? The Manchester Debating Union is a society, which encompasses universities across Manchester. We hold public debates every other week on Thursdays at 5pm (University Place) with guest speakers including academics, MPs, journalists and campaigners. All public debates are free to attend. We also head to the pub afterwards, where you’ll get a chance to discuss the debate further with our speakers!

The MDU also runs competitive debate training; improving your knowledge of current affairs and gaining confidence speaking in public. We send teams to competitions across the UK, Europe and the World. Debating teaches you to look at any issue from all sides. All our training events are held in University Place at 5pm for the start of our training sessions – beginners are welcome at any time of the year!

Our membership fees vary to account for different levels of interest:

-       £10 for training sessions only for a year

-       £15 for training and entry to intervarsity debating competitions for a year

-       £35 for training and competitions for the whole of your university course
