Hey! My name is Saffa Mir and I am your Community Officer for 2016/2017.

I'm really excited about starting this role and looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible. I really want to focus on engaging students with the local residents to build a stronger and more cohesive community. I am also really interested in hearing any ideas you may have about how to engage with the community, so please feel free to contact me.

My wisdom

I would encourage everyone to get involved in the union as early on in their degree as they can. I left it until my final year and really wish I hadn’t as you get so many great opportunities, from society events to getting involved in the student movement. The range of people you meet is also great; especially as you all have something in common! Whether you’re interested in democracy, volunteering or campaigning there really is something for everyone.

My favourite thing about the Students' Union

Welcome Week! Nothing beats the excitement of fresher’s arriving and getting into the spirit of things by visiting the societies at the fair. Not just fresher’s but it's great as a non-fresher to be able to visit the fair because of the excitement and buzz around it. Aside from the fair the student union itself is packed and that’s a great environment that I'm looking forward to working in.

My Top Priorities:

1. Safer Streets

2. Multi Faith Committee

3. More Inclusive Welcome Week

4. Make Exec Officers more Accessible

5. Prevent Exploitation from Landords

As your Community Officer Saffa works as part of a wider team to:

Develop a stronger sense of identity and social responsibility across and between the student and wider community

Direct the Union’s work on matters concerning student accommodation, crime, safety and student residents

Work within Halls to ensure their input and influence on Union activities and strengthen the experience of students in halls

Represent students within the local community to Councils, Residents Groups and other community organisations

Saffa is based in the Student Voice office on the ground floor of the Students' Union building on Oxford Road.
