Statement on New Zealand Terrorist Attack

Friday 15-03-2019 - 11:54

49 people have been killed and at least 20 seriously wounded after two mosque shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand this morning.

We wish to send our deepest sympathies and condolences to the Muslim Community who have lost their families and friends.

We stand in solidarity with the Muslim Community and reiterate that these extremist forms of hate will not be tolerated and as citizens of the world we will do our part to show our support to the victims during this difficult time.

Islamophobia and Anti Muslim Hatred is embedded in our everyday lives, in the form of discrimination, dehumanization and violence having long-lasting and devastating effects on individuals, their communities and families. It is an increasingly problematic issue and a threat we all need to be vigilant of and need to take seriously.

We as the Speak Up! Stand Up! Campaign will aim to continue our work with the passion and vision to prevent hate and intolerance from manifesting itself in people, creating interventions in order to prevent the escalation of violent acts of hate.  It is important to recognise that as bystanders our responsibility to call out Hate in all its forms both online and in person.

We advise that if you have a Muslim friends and families, staff or colleagues reach out to them, spend time with them, as this is a time they will need your support.

Please be vigilant of other problematic behaviours that can occur, protecting yourself and others.
