Halls and Societies

Our student leaders are incredible. Throughout the year, Society and Halls committees work tirelessly to positively impact the lives of their members.We want to celebrate all the work that our student leaders do, from putting on amazing and inclusive events, to creating impactful campaigns, to making their society super green.

Across our social media channels, we will highlight some of these achievements and reward and acknowledge those that have excelled in what they do. We want to recognise that Society and Halls committees have impacted the experience of so many students here.

Throughout the year halls RA/JCRs organise and host hundreds of events and activities which engage with thousands of residents.

1. Demonstrate event organising and planning skills with a commitment to financial responsibility e.g. evidence of budgeting and planning.
2. Include information about engagement with the event, successful marketing and promotion of the event and evidence/ feedback about how the event was memorable for attendees.
3. Evidence how the committee has worked well together.

Presidents are elected each year to coordinate the work of their associated halls RA/JCR. This award recognises a President which has supported their committee to achieve their aims. They will have encouraged the team to work in a positive, respectful and fun environment and will leave a lasting impact.

2. How they have gone above and beyond their duties to ensure that the activities of the RA/JCR are second to none
3. How the leadership of this individual has been integral to the committee successes.

Throughout the year halls RA/JCR committees dedicate their time and effort to provide a great student experience for their fellow residents. This award goes to a committee which has organised successful activity throughout the year through brilliant teamwork, organisation and planning all whilst having fun throughout. This committee will also have worked closely with the SU to provide the widest range of activities to their residents.

1. Evidence how the committee has shown a commitment to careful planning and organisation.
2. Evidence the shared visions the committee works towards and show how the committee works towards them as a team.
3. Show how the committee consistently operates democratically.

Committee members are elected each year to convene projects, events and activities relevant to students in their hall and to represent the voice of their fellow residents. Outstanding members often go above and beyond their own role to support other committee members and contribute towards shared goals. They make a unique contribution to their group and leave a lasting impact.

1. How this individual has gone above and beyond their duties to ensure that the activities of the RA/JCR are second to none,
2. How this individual have been a true team player that helps create a positive working environment
3. How the contribution this individual offers is an integral part of the committee.

This award is for a Community focused event; this could either be a community building activity within the hall, community building across halls such as a joint event or a community building event which connects to the wider community outside of halls. This may also include engaging charitable fundraising activity.

1. Demonstrate an understanding of community needs.
2. Evidence how this event brought a community closer together.
3. Evidence the positive impact this event had on community relations.

The award for Most Supportive Reslife staff member is designed to recognise any Reslife team member who has provided excellent support to their associated hall RA/JCR throughout the year. This team member will have worked closely with the RA/JCR since being elected and will continue to work closely with them to provide an inclusive range of activities.

1. Provides outstanding help and support to the committee.
2. Will stand out to students as someone who cares for the wellbeing
3. Will consistently make themselves available to the committee to offer support when needed.

This award celebrates student-led sustainability events that are creative, inspiring and successful at either raising awareness of environmental issues or reducing the environmental impact of an event.

1. Explain how the event demonstrates a creative approach to sustainability

3. How the organisers of the event demonstrated excellent organisation
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the sustainable impact of the event

This award celebrates the RA/JCR committee that have worked in close partnership with another group.

The joint activity will have engaged their residents in a potentially new group or engaged them in an activity which they would otherwise would not have experienced.

Societies Criteria

All nominations should demonstrate the impact of any activities on their society using clear examples. Please ensure you include everything you wish to be considered, as the award is based solely on the information provided.

When nominating a society, please include as much information as possible, including examples of how they have gone above and beyond to benefit their members. You can include pictures or documents to support your nomination.

This award recognises the Academic and Departmental society who have gone all out to produce outstanding activities for their members and the wider student community. Academic and Departmental societies play a key role in developing their members beyond their studies as well as offering a safe and social environment that welcomes anyone who wishes to become more involved in their course.

This award recognises an individual whose efforts have had an outstanding impact towards sustainability on campus and beyond.

Nominations should:

1. Evidence the impact of the individual’s contribution and enthusiasm towards sustainability
2. Include information about how the nominee supports their fellow students and helps build a sustainable environment on campus
3. Evidence a commitment to sustainable practises whether within societies, volunteering, campaigns, as a student rep, or through event organisation
4. Nominations could also demonstrate how the individual has helped to build networks that improve sustainability across campus.

The winner may have worked tirelessly to ensure finance is managed well, created incredible events for their members or simply been a strong leader that has allowed the society to grow and progress over the year.

This award recognises a new society formed in the 2019/20 Academic Year who have had an incredible first year as a society. The winner will have held regular events, may have had a positive impact on the student/wider community, or have built a consistently engaged membership.

Sometimes, a society may not be large in membership or host events every week but still have a fantastic impact on the student/wider community. This award recognises the society that has consistently created a community space for their membership throughout the academic year and contributed to creating meaningful memories for their members. The winner will have made a positive impact on the wellbeing of its members, and/or created a positive impact in the wider community.

This award recognises a society that has made tremendous progress with both their society’s activities and membership engagement this year. The winner will have either: held significantly more events/meetings throughout the year for their members and/or the wider community in comparison than last year OR significantly increased society membership in comparison to last year.
