Hello and welcome to the University of Manchester Drama Society (UMDS)!
We are a society that brings student actors, writers, directors, producers and creatives together across UoM and MMU to create some of Manchester's most vibrant fringe theatre. Our mission statement over the past two years is to provide opportunity, diversity and inclusiveness. We offer multiple performance opportunities throughout the year, producing around 20 shows during the academic year, scratch nights and creative workshops.
In the first semester we have our Autumn Season in which five plays are selected to be performed. The Freshers’ Play, a play put on solely by first years, rounds off the term. Our second semester is our in-house fringe festival, the MIFTAs. Eight plays are staged and judged by a selected panel with awards at the end of the festival. Before Easter is our annual Drama ball, which all members and supporters are invited to. Alongside these, we have a large variety of socials and fundraisers throughout the year, including our brand new collaborative group HIVE, bringing you further opportunities to showcase short pieces of writing throughout the year. We also hold our New Writing Showcase in April in which 4 newly-written short plays are showcased together for three nights.
This year, in order to grant fair and equal opportunities to all, Drama Society have introduced a Creative Team Pool for individuals interested in creative positions. Online applications are submitted in the run up to each show season. Successful applicants will be allocated a production to work on. Have no fear, however! Unsuccessful applicants first time round will be considered from the pool for future productions.
