Hello and welcome to the University of Manchester Drama Society (UMDS)!
We are a society that brings together student actors, writers, directors, producers and creatives to create some of Manchester's most vibrant fringe theatre. Our mission statement is to provide opportunity, diversity and inclusiveness. We offer multiple performance opportunities throughout the year, producing around 20 shows during the academic year, plus scratch nights and creative workshops.
In the first semester we have our Autumn Fringe. We welcome submissions of all kind; published plays, new writing, works-in-progress, devised work or something else entirely. Let your imagination run wild! Part of this season is the Freshers’ Play, a show comprised entirely of first years. Our second semester is our in-house fringe festival, the MIFTAs. Around eight plays are staged and judged by a selected panel, with awards presented at our annual Drama Ball. After Easter is The Shorts season where original short plays are showcased back-to-back, a great chance to try your hand at writing. Finally, the Society takes up two shows to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival every year where members have the opportunity to experience the biggest, most exciting arts festival on the planet.
Alongside these, we have a large variety of socials and fundraisers throughout the year, including HIVE, our informal scratch night, bringing you further opportunities to showcase work throughout the year.
Anyone interested in creative team roles can submit themselves to The Pool. If your application is successful, you will be allocated a show to work on that seems a good fit for you and your interests. Have no fear, however! Unsuccessful applicants first time round will be considered from the pool for future productions.
