Hey! My name is Naa Acquah and I am your General Secretary for 2016/2017.
My priorities are:
1. Develop Gen Sec Surgeries
2. Host more events on North Campus
3. Embed the new strategic plan into the union.
4.Focus on student finances and part time jobs
5. Integrate the union into the city and the local community
I really believe that everyone could be given the ability and tools to thrive and grow, no matter your background, race, gender or sexuality. I think that’s one of the reasons I ran to become General Secretary, as my involvement in the Union gave me the ability to shape my future and I wanted to take the Union’s role in students’ lives to the next level. Having been an undergraduate student and a postgrad student, I think I’ve got a good understanding of education at Manchester and what the Union can do to improve it.
My favourite thing about the Students' Union
The buzz and excitement that happens when everyone is around! When everyone gets together at the Union during Welcome Week, a busy evening in the café, a huge gig at the Academy, a campaign being advertised in the foyer and, of course, Pangaea, it’s the best environment. I feel lucky that I get to work in such an uplifting environment every day for a year.
As the General Secretary Naa is the lead representative of the Students' Union and has lead responsibility for Union strategy and development. Her role involves:
Directing the Union’s representative work
Supporting the activities of the Executive Committee
Chairing the Union Trustee Board
Chairing the sub Committees of the Trustee Board
Acting as the primary liaison between the University and the Union
Attending NUS National Conference (and default delegate to other committees and conferences in the absence of an officer with the relevant portfolio)
Having lead responsibility for long term strategic issues affecting the organisation
Ensuring the dissemination of information regarding all aspects of Union activities to all of our students
Naa is based in the Student Voice office on the ground floor of the Students' Union building on Oxford Road.
