India Burgess

INTERESTS/MEMBERSHIPS/SOCIETIES:

I am a Modern History student going into my final year, with a focus on Asian History. I also study French and Mandarin alongside my History modules. I volunteer with the Student Action Homeless Outreach Project, and ran the Manchester 10k in May in aid of The Mustard Tree, a local homelessness charity. I am passionate about making a positive difference to local, and global, communities, and intend to work in sustainable development following graduation.

WHAT YOU WISH TO ACHIEVE, LEARN and CONTRIBUTE TO THE BOARD AND STUDENTS’ UNION:

As a trustee of the Students’ Union, I hope to contribute to the Union’s mission of becoming as diverse, engaging, and accessible as possible. The Union should offer opportunities that every student at the university would want to be involved with, and I will aim to play a central role in realising this objective. I hope to learn about how the University and student population are tied to Manchester’s community, and how to develop these relations to benefit both students, and our local area.

I will be a member of the People and Culture Committee and on the Manchester Academy Venues Limited Board, overseeing all commercial areas.

Khizar Khalil

INTERESTS/MEMBERSHIPS/SOCIETIES:

I grew up in the Himalayas and then moved to the UK to study criminology and Public Services in Birmingham before undertaking undergraduate programme here in Manchester.

Throughout my academic studies I have contributed towards a bright future for all students by taking part in various activities such as being a student representative and taking on leadership roles.

A student-led organisation enables representation of diversity within the union and promotes uniqueness which resounds with me.

WHAT YOU WISH TO ACHIEVE, LEARN and CONTRIBUTE TO THE BOARD AND STUDENTS’ UNION:

I would like to contribute to the student Union’s approach to safeguarding students from criminal activity which predominantly affects areas with student populations. Concerns regarding the well-being of students who do not feel part of the union due to complicated nature of multiple factors involved i.e. the language barrier will be highly important and emphasised during my time as a student trustee.

As a student trustee, I will also develop my own skills and wish to learn more about the financial aspects of the union.

I will be a member of the Governance and Appointments Panel and the Manchester Academy Venues Limited Board, overseeing all commercial areas of the Union.

Sarah Faulkner

INTERESTS/MEMBERSHIPS/SOCIETIES:

Hi I’m Sarah, an undergraduate student studying Drama. It’s my second time around at the University of Manchester as I graduated with a science degree in 1983! After that I became a nurse and worked for the NHS for 34 years, spending fourteen of those as an Executive Director. Coming back to University to do something completely different has been the most amazing and happy experience and I’m looking forward to the second year.

Drama is a time intensive course because of the extra-curricular activities required, particularly time invested in theatre and film. I’m a member of both the Drama and Shakespeare Societies and would encourage anyone to come along to auditions and showcase events and have a go at getting involved. It’s not just for Drama students and it’s a great way to meet people and learn a range of skills that are useful in everyday life. I’m a Volunteer at HOME Manchester, and for the biennial Manchester International Festival (next in July 2019). This summer (2018) I took an intensive Mandarin course run by the University’s Confucius Institute and spent three weeks in Shanghai at the East China Normal University to learn Mandarin with cultural studies; one of the many opportunities to study abroad that is on offer. Apart from this I am a keen traveller, cyclist and fell walker.

WHAT YOU WISH TO ACHIEVE, LEARN and CONTRIBUTE TO THE BOARD AND STUDENTS’ UNION:

As a Student Representative for my course I have attended Staff and Student Liaison Committee meetings at both Faculty and School level, bringing issues to the table for resolution and achieving results on behalf of my fellow students. The experience of starting University is a big adjustment for school leavers and mature students alike and I will bring the lessons learned to both the Student trustee role and that of Peer Mentor this year. I am particularly interested in the development and delivery of the Wellbeing Strategy, and in making sure that students get the most from their membership of the Students’ Union overall.

As a Student Trustee I will contribute the knowledge, skills and experience gained from working in the NHS, for the benefit of the Students’ Union and every student in the University. During my NHS years I worked in partnership with politicians and councillors, communities, patients and families. A Partnership approach is something that I will champion as a Student Trustee.
